After a five year hiatus, Lollapalooza is going back on the road, this time unabashedly sponsored by Microsoft Xbox. At the shows, fans will be able to compete in Xbox games against one another, or even against members of the bands in a centrally located multimedia complex called the "GameRiot Pavillion." Lollapalooza began as an "alternative" music festival, headlined by Seattle's original "alternative" grunge bands. The question remains whether Lollapalooza can sell this new, wholly un-alternative incarnation with such open corporate sponsorship to a fan base that is so sensitive to, and critical of, "selling-out."
