Record companies helped establish and grow bands, they help build them into brands big enough to do away with the middleman and connect directly to their audience.

SongSlide
This is the way that the music industry is headed. There's a site called SongSlide -www.songslide.com- that lets any musician sell their music and let fans pick the price they pay. Ant band can do what Radiohead is doing.

finally
It only makes sense that acts that big would eventually start doing this. After all, most of what a record company provides to an established artist is overhead. Up-and-comers need the marketing might of a label to muscle their way onto the airwaves and the (diminishing) shelf space in record stores. Self-produced acts like NIN especially have little in the way of needs from a label.
