Wallpaper Magazine decided that the movement deserves its attention and devoted a recent issue to the topic.
It's unlikely that this movement will become mass and that we will soon see American dads and kids on weekends mucking out their pigs, instead of going to soccer practice.
However, it's the fringe of a bigger movement, one that's looking for greater control and accountability over the food they are eating.

Ed, Thanks for calling attention to this topic. Urban farming is definitely on the upswing. I run a place called the Urban Farm (urbanfarm.org) in the heart of Phoenix AZ and I have found tremendous interest in the concept in the past 5 years as I have opened the Urban Farm to the public. This is very much my hobby gone wild that I am lucky enough to get to share with people on a daily basis. When we started offering tours and classes a few years ago we would get 2 or 3 people?maybe. Now however it is different. Yesterday we sponsored two classes, one on composting and the other on keeping chickens in your yard. We had 28 and 26 attendees respectively in each class. Then we did a private tour for a group from Arizona State University and had 25. Woohoo is all I have to say. One significant piece of what we are doing here is that we are teaching people to integrate food as part of their landscape, encouraging people ?if you are going to plant something, you might as well make it edible.? It is catching on. Now we are targeting more public places like schools, parks and churches with our efforts?and having fun all along the way. FarmerGreg
