If prizes were awarded for the geekiest vehicle ever invented, Segway would surely be right there at the top. Undeniably, it's a brilliant piece of engineering, and according to those who've ridden the machine, a pretty incredible ride.

However, the mental image of Segway and rider gliding down the street at 12mph hardly conveys cool. It's this image, together with the steep price tag that's prevented the "greatest invention of the 21st century" from gaining traction.

Could that all be about to change for the Segway brand?

A group of talented young engineers at Segway have succeeded in hacking the technology to develop an off-road recreational vehicle. The result looks like the bizarre progeny of a mountain bike, an off road bike, an ATV and a goat.

It's certainly cooler, more dynamic and it has the "extreme" factor going for it. Currently Centaur is still just a concept and has yet to obtain production approval.

Segway should think beyond unit sales for the Centaur, and instead, consider the vehicle as an image driver. It could be precisely what the brand needs to move it from geek to cool.
