BBH has a new campaign out in the UK for Barclaycard touting ease and convenience of payment, but what struck me most was the URL they use at the end of the spot, where instead of the corporate dot com address, there's a Facebook url.

card

This is a clear sign of the move away from corporate web destinations in favor of the locations where consumers are spending most of their time. This is a big shift and one that must be quite a challenge for companies to get their heads around, but it reflects the new reality.

This is just the start because it forces the agencies hand to work out how best to Facebook and looking at the Barclaycard example there are certainly some challenges.

Interestingly, the experience seems just like a corporate web site and not the organic, fluid experience you expect on Facebook.

While it's smart understand where your customers are, getting the experience right is critical .

Faceless Bank
The joke used to be that banks were always giving stuff away. Looking back now I realize they only gave you something in return for opening an account. My first impression of the Barclays Facebook page was, wow, a good idea because it is a natural place to give gifts. Unfortunately I quickly realized they weren't even offering the crappy song for free. Banks will probably never get it when it comes to sharing and should stick to commercials until they do.

expensive!
What an expensive way of obtaining 2,500 Facebook fans! Which would suggest just sticking a Facebook (or any other) URL on the end of an ad does not make it integrated with the web presence. Though I think Barclaycard has a long way to go before people start confessing to their Facebook friends they are fans of the credit card.

the migration away from control- facebook is the new url
Migration away from control? You must be joking... this is a bank and this is just ONE of the many touchpoints that will have been created for this campaign. They have a full corporate website (no duh!) and print and television and probably radio as well as facebook and twitter and Youtube... and using the facebook url is just a way to track... the same ad running next week might give their regular site address or something else entirely. This is NOT ?a clear sign of the move away from corporate web destinations in favor of the locations where consumers are spending most of their time.? This is marketing as it always has been done!

facebook is the url for this campaign
Sandy, I have to tell you that you are wrong- this is not a test- the Facebook Url is the MAIN destination for the campaign. There's no testing happening!!

facebook is the url for this campaign
Well, they are up to 37k followers, so can't be that bad. OK, it is the MAIN destination for the campaign, but the point is that some control has been given away, and it is up o companies to get used to this now. I work for a large health and well being company, and we are also about to embark on this tool, so are URLs will no longer always be ........com/.. but start with Facebook or Twitter etc.
