Stories from the past week or so that highlight of some interesting trends.

RetailEducation

Circuit City understand that its business depends not just on selling, but also on educating consumers about the future. Selling consumer electronics is all about anticipation and the best way of doing this is to take people to the floor of CES via a webcast

The Urban Wild

People are looking to bring wilderness to urban environments(NYT archive) with wild gardens and parks. This is probably a reaction to rapid urbanization and the challenge of getting outside the city with busy schedules, and represents a more convenient way to fullfill man's basic need to connect with nature.

UberLuxury Electronics

Sony is doing this with the Qualia line and now Truvia want to do with PCs. This is a tiny market, but it is probably out there. It flips the current technology model on its head and places style ahead of performance. However, a $50,000 computer might be pushing it too far.

Kongverts

Kongisking.net is the fan site for Peter Jackson's forthcoming movie King Kong. It just shows that Jackson hasn't lost his desire to reach and connect with fans. Something he did so successfully with Lord of the Rings. What makes the site and builds the connection are the production diaries. We are currently at day 76 and there are lots of postings. Of course, they are films, not blogs, where Peter Jackson explains what's currently happening on the set. This is helps create great word of mouth as this site really provides the movie buff with something to talk about.
