india builds its own $200 pc

For years, a number of Western technology giants promised to bring low-cost computing to the developing world. However, It was an Indian organization, funded with a government grant of just $630,000, that's created a personal computer for the masses.

The computer is very simple, runs Linux not Windows and has a six-hour battery life to help it cope with the irregular power supply in rural areas.

The target audience for these computers is students, schools and government workers.

Once they are produced in sufficient volume, the price is likely to come down below $200.
