Time Magazine has a cover story this week about the state of science in the US and also deals with the image problem of science in schools.

Many people believe that science and technology are the future growth engines of the developed world. However, it appears that scientists may have a bit of an image problem. At least that's what recent research amongst UK kids discovered.

Researchers questioned 11.000 kids about their perceptions and impressions of scientists and they discovered some alarming results; 70% not picturing scientists as normal young and attractive men and women and reasons given for not choosing science as a career included "because you would constantly be depressed and tired and not have time for family", and "because they all wear big glasses and white coats and I am female".

Any ideas on how science's image could be improved?

at least educational organizations need to start early with these kids and rid these kids' brains of the impressions of science that pop culture has put in there. it's also impossible to change the makeup of science teachers, i don't think i ever had a remotely-close-to-cool one in my k-12 years. the way to go is a fundamental change in the way science is taught to kids are educated. sure, they need to learn scientific method, etc. but they need to be shown cool stuff involving science early on. find the scientists that have social skills and put them in front of kids once a month.

we also have to remember who we're talking to about this. if you had asked me what i thought of advertising when i was 14/15, i would've said in no more words that "it sucks" and look at me now...
