video game culture starts to mimic sports culture

Rob Walker, over at the New York Times, again proves he is a master of uncovering hidden gems in the world of pop culture, this time it's in video games (reg required).

Rob's discovery that there are now fantasy leagues for fans that follow professional video players (cyber-atheltes), is further evidence of the shift in gaming culture from the fringes to the edges of mainstream acceptance.

This emergence of the trend for games to mimic sports culture, is something that Influx talked about back in April 2005, with the article entitled The Video Gaming Games to be the next X-Games.
