There used to be a chasm between the worlds of business and art.

They were two very distinct disciplines with their own philosophies and approaches. Artists were rarely called upon to bring their creativity into the business world. Now it's all the rage.

With the desire to keep products and places interesting, artists are helping out by transforming the bland and boring, into the interesting and cool.

A couple of examples have come to Influx's attention in recent weeks:

The Italian fashion group Miss Sixty now has its own hotel, Sixty Hotel, in Riccone on the Adriatic coast. But its not your typical resort hotel, 30 different artists worked on the hotel's 40 rooms.

The portable USB drive can be a fairly bland device, unless you enlist the help of an artist. This is exactly what Mimoco has done by bringing artistic humor, flavor and color to the geeky device.

Coincidently, one of Mimco's artists, Jon Burgerman also designed one of the rooms in the Sixty Hotel.

Please note this is not about design, but the artistic overlay on products and environments.

Some strategies may involve the use of design to change and evolve the form and the environment. Artists will be called into add an artistic edge to a familiar environment or product form or to collaborate directly with designers.
