Halo is one of the most successful game franchises of all time and has all the right ingredients to be a great movie. The movie is set for release in 2008.

Given that Microsoft is involved and the scale of the project, it would have been easy to imagine them selecting big name director like Michael Bay, Ridley Scott or James Cameron, instead, they've chosen Neill Blomkamp, who has yet to direct a feature.

However, Blomkamp attracted everyone's attention with his short, "Alive in Joburg", which showed an amazing level of creativity and imagination.

This short film exploded across the web in the pre-You Tube days of early 2005.

In an industry where networking powers are often more valued than talent, the Internet has brought an unheard of meritocracy to the table.

In this new level internet-driven playing field, talent can rise to the top. Talent that's been discovered and validated by the massive web community and is not based not on the judgment of a few executives in Hollywood.

We can expect to see dozens more Blomkamps in the next few years.
