Back in February, the British budget hotel group Travelodge appointed the world's first director of sleep on a salary of $90,000.

The role includes testing mattress tension and pillow density, as well as writing a "dream plan" that every guest can follow to get a good night's sleep.

What is a Cleanser of the Soul's Striving?
Director of Sleep isn't bad, but how about Creative Warrior? Or CEO of Fun? Storyteller? Those were titles I ran across for a story I wrote about the very subject of the monikers in which we wrap the work we do. Turns out that an inspired name for your workplace function can turn tasks into quests, a job description into a bible, an office into a church and the act of earning money into the act of faith (or psychological affirmation that one's actions nowadays -- but not one's beliefs -- run thick with significance that reverberates far beyond the thin sack of our flesh).

Such transformations mark the further evolution of America's spirituality of materiality, but there's a dark side to mass apotheosis: Just how do you know who's doing what when the common vocabulary of recognizable titles (e.g., Janitor) fall before the scythe of individuality (e.g., Cleanser of the Soul's Striving)?
