At this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, the conversation seems to be firmly centered around doom and gloom.

The “toast” of the event appears to be Nouriel Roubini, the economist who predicted the current financial crisis. People apparently were desperate to hear from Roubini just to learn bad things are going to get, which apparently is a lot worse.

While negativity was the order of the day, amidst the gloom, there was a ray of light that came in the form of Benjamin Zander, who challenged his audience to find positivity.

Zander is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic and a well known speaker at events like TED and PopTech. Zander’s message was clear, real leaders are the ones that bring fresh thinking in challenging times. His specialty is getting people to bring the best out of themselves.

Here are a couple of films that show Zander in action. At TED...

Zander clearly is making a great point, in these challenging times we need people to give their best, to come up with new ideas and solutions, the very things that can move us forward. Organizations have a tough challenge ahead; they have to motivate and inspire, while their employees are living in fear of their futures and afraid to take risks.

Interesting to see WPP's Sir Martin Sorrell getting into the blogging game thanks to the UK's Daily Telegraph.

He seems upset at the lack of American clients at Davos this year.

"Heavy snow and security. Travelling to Davos will be a nightmare for most. Larger number of broken ankles and hips than usual. But if you're going to break something, a Davos hospital is as good as any. Looking at the prospective attendance list, many American CEOs seem to be absent, as it's in the middle of their reporting season - and the middle of a financial crisis.

Regarding the breaking news of the Fed's emergency rate cut, I must be helpful to sentiment, but increased liquidity is the key. Cutting rates won't do the job.

Back to Davos, we've also got to deal with terrible weather, but it'll clear tomorrow, just like the economy, I hope."

YouTube has often been ridiculed as a media outlet, with analysts pointing to hamster videos and ranting teens

However, YouTube has a different target in its sights, it's clearly trying to build credibility as a media and is inserting its brand into all kind of interesting places from the 2008 US Election to its latest move to partner the World Economic Forum in Davos.

You Tube and Davos

This is all about brand action; offering up the brand to the World Economic Forum to let consumers into a previously closed affair and in the process getting YouTube a seat at the top table of world leaders

It's all surprisingly simple and easy- no ad campaign, no PR, just a page on the internet.

Although YouTube may lack the seriousness of established media outlets it's community, scale and connection to the people makes it a media which offers access like no other and for a old-fashioned institution like the World Economic Forum, it gets a contemporary shot in the arm.

Who will YouTube partner with next?

The Queen of England?
The White House?

Suggestions in the comments section please.
